Steel vs composite gas cylinder: how do they differ and which should you choose?

A comparison of steel and composite gas cylinders covering construction, weight, durability, cost, inspection and how common each is in Vietnam, to help dealers choose the right type of cylinder.

Alongside the familiar steel cylinder, the composite gas cylinder — a lightweight cylinder made from synthetic materials — has appeared on the market. Gas dealers and businesses often ask: how do the two types differ, and which is the better investment for their cylinder fleet? This article gives an objective comparison based on the criteria dealers care about most.

How the two cylinder types are built

  • Steel gas cylinders: the body is made from steel sheet designed for pressure vessels, pressed into two halves and welded together, then fitted with a handle guard, foot ring and valve; the outside is powder coated. This is the most common type today.
  • Composite gas cylinders: usually have an inner liner of engineering plastic, wrapped in resin-impregnated reinforcing fibre (such as glass fibre), with an outer protective plastic casing. The exact construction varies by manufacturer.

Steel vs composite gas cylinders compared

Weight

The clearest advantage of a composite gas cylinder is that it is much lighter than a steel cylinder of the same capacity, making it easier for users to carry. Steel cylinders are heavier but sturdy, coping well with rolling, stacking and rough handling.

Rust resistance and seeing the gas level

Composite does not rust; some models have a translucent body so you can see how much gas is left. Steel cylinders are protected from rust by their coating — when the paint chips, the steel can rust, so they need proper storage and inspection on schedule. See LPG cylinder powder coating.

Cylinder cost and service life

Composite cylinders are usually considerably more expensive than steel cylinders of the same capacity. In a cylinder exchange scheme — where dealers must invest in hundreds or thousands of cylinders in circulation and accept that some will be lost — the cylinder price is the deciding factor. Steel cylinders require a lower investment, have a long service life with periodic inspection, and the steel can still be recycled at the end of their life.

Filling, inspection and the wider ecosystem

Vietnam’s network of filling stations, inspection bodies, valve parts and repair technicians has been built mainly around steel cylinders. Composite cylinders may need their own inspection procedures, equipment and requirements under the standards that apply to this type of cylinder. Before investing, check carefully with the filling stations and inspection bodies in your area.

Private branding on the cylinder

Steel cylinders can easily be given the dealer’s own paint colour and printed or stamped logo, ordered in batches — see ordering private-label LPG cylinders. Composite cylinders can be customised on the outer casing, but this depends heavily on what the manufacturer can offer.

Which should you choose?

  • Mass-market distributors and cylinder exchange schemes: steel 12kg and 45kg cylinders remain the most economical and easiest to operate.
  • Premium segment, customers who prioritise light weight (such as older people or flats without a lift): composite cylinders may be worth considering as well, once you have fully accounted for the cylinder cost and the local filling and inspection options.

Whichever you choose, the cylinder must meet the standards, come with inspection documents and still be within its inspection date — see how to tell a compliant LPG cylinder.

Frequently asked questions

Is a composite gas cylinder safer than a steel one?

Both types are safe when manufactured to standard, inspected on schedule and used correctly. Each has its own characteristics; rely on the certification and inspection documents of each product rather than general advertising claims.

Can a composite cylinder share the same regulator and stove as a steel cylinder?

It depends on the valve fitted to the cylinder. Check that the regulator is compatible with the cylinder valve before use.

What type of cylinder does VietnhatGas manufacture?

VietnhatGas manufactures powder-coated steel LPG cylinders in batches, pressure tests every cylinder and provides inspection documents for each batch.
