Gas safety for families with young children: tips for homes with children and older people
Gas safety tips for families with young children and older people: put away lighters and mini gas canisters, lock stove knobs, position the cylinder, use a portable stove for hotpot, and teach children the smell of gas and emergency numbers.

Young children are curious and love turning knobs and pressing buttons; older people may forget to turn off the stove or have a weaker sense of smell, making it harder for them to notice the smell of gas. That is why gas safety for families with children and older people calls for a few extra precautions compared with an ordinary household. Below are simple things every home can do straight away.
Keep lighters and mini gas canisters out of children’s reach
Keep gas lighters and matches in a high or lockable drawer; do not leave them on tables, low shelves or in open bags.
Keep spare mini gas canisters in a dry, cool, well-ventilated place, away from heat sources and out of children’s reach — see how long a mini gas canister lasts.
Do not let children play with lighters or gas canisters, even empty ones.
Gas stoves: knob locks and cooking habits
If your stove has a safety lock or knob lock feature, use it; you can also use stove knob covers sold in baby product shops, choosing a type that fits your stove.
Turn pot and pan handles inwards, so they do not stick out over the edge of the stove.
Do not let children play near the stove while you are cooking; a safety gate at the kitchen door can help.
Never leave the stove unattended while cooking, even if you are only stepping out for a moment.
Close the gas cylinder valve after dinner or when the whole family is away.
Place the gas cylinder where children cannot reach it
The gas cylinder should stand upright in a well-ventilated place, away from heat sources and outside children’s play areas, so that children cannot turn the valve themselves. If the cylinder is kept in a kitchen cabinet, the cabinet needs ventilation openings and must not contain flammable items. Do not let children stand or sit on the cylinder or pull on the hose. For details, see where to place a gas cylinder at home.
Portable gas stoves and hotpot at the dining table
A family hotpot meal is when children are most likely to touch the stove and the hot pot:
Place the portable gas stove in the middle of the table, on a firm, flat surface, away from where young children sit.
Use a pot that suits the size of the stove; an oversized pot that overhangs and covers the canister compartment can cause the canister to heat up.
Fit the gas canister so that it seats correctly and move the locking lever as instructed; remove the canister after the meal.
Do not place two stoves close together or put the stove near another heat source.
Children must not turn the stove on or off or change the gas canister themselves.
For children old enough to understand, explain that gas has an odour added so that leaks are easy to notice — see what gas smells like. Teach them to remember:
If they smell gas: do not flick any switches, do not play with fire, leave the kitchen and tell an adult straight away.
Never turn the cylinder valve or the stove knobs themselves.
If there is a fire: run outside, and do not hide in a cupboard or under the bed.
Tips for homes with older people
If you can, choose a stove with a feature that automatically cuts off the gas when the flame goes out.
Put a “close the gas valve” reminder near the stove; relatives can check regularly to help.
Check hoses and joints regularly with soapy water, never with a flame.
Emergency phone numbers
Put these up somewhere easy to see: 114 (fire and rescue), 115 (medical emergency) and the phone number of your usual gas dealer. If you smell gas: do not switch electrical equipment on or off, close the valve, open doors for ventilation, get everyone outside and call your dealer or 114 from outside. Gas safety for families is the whole household’s job, not just the job of whoever does the cooking.
Lighters around the home also attract young children’s curiosity; our article on child-resistant lighters with a safety lock explains how the lock works, how to use it correctly and why lighters still need to be kept out of children’s reach.
Your regular gas dealer’s number is only truly useful if that dealer is reliable; our guide on how to choose a trustworthy gas dealer helps the whole family recognise dealers with a clear address and brand and transparent prices.
Frequently asked questions
Is a portable gas stove safe for hotpot with young children?
Yes, if it is used correctly: the stove and gas canisters are of clear origin, the pot is the right size, the stove is placed away from where children sit, and an adult is always watching.
Should a home with young children fit a gas detector?
Yes. A leak detector is an extra layer of protection, especially when the whole family is asleep or nobody is in the kitchen; install it low, near the floor, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
At what age can children turn on a gas stove by themselves?
There is no single age; it depends on each child’s understanding and carefulness. When they start learning, an adult needs to guide and supervise them directly.
